Detoxifying with castor oil packs

Used for centuries, and still a customer favorite.

Castor oil packs have been used for centuries to promote liver health due to their ability to stimulate circulation and support detoxification. Here's how they work:

  • Stimulation of circulation. Castor oil promotes increased blood flow and lymphatic circulation in the area where it's applied. This increased circulation can support the transport of nutrients to the liver and enhance the removal of metabolic waste products and toxins from the liver.
  • Detoxification support. The liver is a key organ responsible for detoxifying the body. Castor oil packs may aid in this process by assisting the liver in breaking down toxins more efficiently. The packs can potentially stimulate liver enzymes involved in detoxification pathways, facilitating the removal of harmful substances from the body.
  • Reduction of inflammation. Ricinoleic acid, the main component of castor oil, possesses anti-inflammatory properties. By reducing inflammation in the liver and surrounding tissues, castor oil packs may support the organ's overall health and function.
  • Relaxation and stress reduction. Applying a castor oil pack can also induce a sense of relaxation and stress relief. Stress can impact liver health, and by promoting relaxation, these packs indirectly support the liver's function by reducing stress-related burdens on the body.

How to make and use a castor oil pack
  1. 1

    Soak the cloth

Pour our cold-pressed castor oil onto a soft cloth or towel (flannel works great!), saturating the fabric, but not to the point where it's dripping. Some people tell you to soak it until it's “dripping,” but I prefer to avoid the mess.

  2. 2

    Place it over your liver

Place the oil-soaked cloth over the right side of your abdomen, just under your rib cage (this is where your liver is located).

  3. 3

    Cover with plastic wrap

Cover one side of your castor-soaked cloth with plastic wrap. This helps you press the cloth against your skin and helps the heating process. (Saran wrap is popular for this! I've also heard of people who use cut-up trash bags, and that seems to work well.)

  4. 4

    Add heat

Apply a heating pad or hot water bottle over the pack for 30-60 minutes.

  5. 5

    Relax

Relax during the treatment; consider lying down to maximize comfort and effectiveness.

  6. 6

    Store and repeat

Afterward, store the pack in a sealed container for reuse. Reapply 2-3 times a week for several weeks.

Sophia · Boost your detox with magnesium

“My tip for anyone looking to amplify their detox routine is to consider integrating magnesium oil into their daily self-care practices. It's a simple addition that can have great benefits, especially in enhancing the effectiveness of the castor oil pack's detoxifying properties. After incorporating castor oil packs into my wellness routine, I started looking for ways to enhance the detoxification process further. That's when I learned that magnesium plays a pivotal role in hundreds of bodily functions, including detoxification pathways. I began applying magnesium oil directly to my feet and legs each night before bed. Not only has this boosted my overall sense of wellbeing, but it's also improved my sleep quality and aided in more effective detoxification alongside the castor oil packs.”

Jaime · Tips for beginners

“When I first started using castor oil packs, I was a bit overwhelmed by the process. My advice for anyone new to this is to start slow and keep it simple. Begin with a small amount of castor oil, and don't feel the need to use the pack for the full recommended time. I started with just 15 minutes a couple of times a week and gradually increased as I became more comfortable with it. Also, I found placing a heat pad over the pack significantly enhances its effectiveness, helping with deeper penetration of the oil. Just make sure to protect your clothing and bedding from oil stains!”

Marcus · Consistency is key

“I've been using castor oil packs for my digestive issues for over a year now, and the biggest game-changer for me was making it a regular part of my routine. Consistency is crucial. I apply the pack to my abdomen three times a week, usually in the evening when I can relax and let it work its magic. One trick I've learned is to prepare multiple cloth wraps in advance, soaked in castor oil and stored in a Ziploc bag in the fridge. This way, they're ready to go, and the coolness is actually quite soothing!”

Tara · Keep it clean

“One aspect of using castor oil packs that deterred me initially was the mess. Castor oil is thick and can get everywhere if you're not careful. My tip is to use an old towel or shirt as a barrier between the pack and your heat source, like a heating pad. This saves your equipment from getting oily. For cleaning the skin afterward, I've found that a mixture of baking soda and water works wonders to remove any residual oil. Lastly, invest in a dedicated set of sheets and pajamas for use on your castor oil days to avoid staining your good ones.”

Ease joint pain

Some of the most heartwarming stories we've ever received.

Castor oil is believed to offer benefits for joint pain due to its anti-inflammatory, analgesic (pain-relieving), and circulation-boosting properties. While relief isn't guaranteed, trust me when I say that some of the most heartwarming stories we have EVER received at Seven Minerals have been about castor oil almost “magically” relieving joint pain for some of our customers. Here's why researchers think it works:

  • Anti-inflammatory effects. Castor oil contains ricinoleic acid, which has demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties. When applied topically to joints, it might help reduce inflammation, easing discomfort associated with general joint pain.
  • Pain relief. Its analgesic properties can potentially alleviate pain when massaged onto sore joints. This could offer temporary relief from discomfort associated with various joint issues.
  • Improved circulation. Massaging castor oil onto affected joints may enhance blood flow to the area. Improved circulation can aid in delivering nutrients and oxygen while removing waste products, potentially supporting the healing process.

How to ease your joints with castor oil
  1. 1

    Prepare

Cleanse the skin around the affected joint to ensure it's free from dirt or other oils.

  2. 2

    Apply

Pour a small amount of castor oil onto a clean cloth or gauze, then gently massage the oil onto the affected joint in a circular motion.

  3. 3

    Cover the area

Place the castor-soaked cloth or gauze directly over the joint and cover it with plastic wrap to keep it in place and prevent staining clothes or furniture. Leave it on for about 30-60 minutes so the oil can penetrate the skin.

  4. 4

    Add heat (optional)

Place a hot water bottle or heating pad over the plastic wrap for added warmth, if desired.

  5. 5

    Finish

Remove the pack and gently massage any remaining oil into the skin. Cleanse the area with mild soap and water to remove excess oil if needed.

Sophie · Blend it with other natural remedies

“I immediately noticed a difference in my knee pain after using castor oil. This encouraged me to dig deeper into natural remedies for the pain I'd be dealing with for years. Since then I began taking some oral supplements (turmeric) but nothing has had an impact similar to castor oil like magnesium oil. I learned it's crucial for muscle relaxation and inflammation (one of the most common reasons for joint pain). I spray it on my knee everyday, and once it's dry, follow it up with my castor oil. Can't live without them.”

Carlos · Be patient

“My biggest tip for beginners is to be consistent. Initially, I applied the castor oil pack to my knee for about 30 minutes every other day. It's important to use warm (not hot) castor oil to increase its effectiveness. I noticed a reduction in pain almost immediately, but for some others I know it took from a few days, up to a week or so. I'd also recommend to wrap the area with a plastic wrap and place a warm towel or heating pad over it to boost the oil's penetration.”

Jacob · Don't forget to move

“As someone who practices yoga, I found integrating castor oil treatments for my ankle joint pain to be incredibly beneficial. After applying the oil, I would gently move the joint through its range of motion before securing the pack. This combination of movement followed by rest with the castor oil pack seemed to enhance the relief I felt. My advice is to gently massage the area with some warm castor oil before applying the pack, as it seems to prepare the joint for the treatment.”

Linda · I use gloves

“Dealing with arthritis in my hands has been challenging, but castor oil has been a game changer. I apply the oil generously over my hands, then slip them into cotton gloves to keep the oil in contact with my skin overnight. The warmth from the gloves helps the oil penetrate more deeply. This method has noticeably reduced my stiffness and pain in the mornings. For anyone trying this, I recommend using lightweight, breathable gloves.”
